Traveling through Kenya offers stunning scenery and unique experiences, but it often involves long journeys on challenging roads. Away from main highways, roads can be unpaved and rough, requiring the vehicle to slow down for safety and comfort.

During this tour, we use a 9-passenger pop-up roof land cruiser for easy game viewing and photography. We only take 6 travelers maximum in each vehicle to allow all travelers to have a window seat. The 2 front seats are utilized for the guide and driver. These vehicles are 4x4's that are able to go off-road, if need be, during your safaris. These vehicles are also used for transfers between destinations.

There are several long transfer days with 3 hours or more of driving, including stops over uneven and dusty terrain. There is one particularly long transfer day of 8 hours of driving, including stops.

Unlike motor coaches, the 4x4 vehicles are not equipped with lavatory facilities or air conditioning. Rest assured, frequent stops will be made along the tour route for your convenience and comfort.

There are no outlets for charging devices available in the 4x4 vehicles. Therefore, if you anticipate using electronic devices, we recommend bringing portable power banks.

Activity Level 3 - Active

You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

As you prepare to explore Kenya, here are some practical suggestions to help you pack light and stay comfortable.

Space is limited, so plan to re-wear and keep it simple. These destinations experience a range of climates and temperatures—from cool mornings and evenings to warm afternoons. The temperatures in your documents reflect historical averages for your travel timeframe, but conditions can vary, so it’s always a good idea to check an online forecast closer to departure.

Here are some tips we’ve gathered from our staff and past travelers:

• Clothing Tips: Choose Smart Fabrics: Lightweight, breathable materials like cotton blends or moisture-wicking fabrics dry quickly and are easy to wash in a sink and air-dry overnight—perfect for keeping luggage light.
• Pack Light: You don’t need a new outfit for every day. Most travelers find 5–8 outfits are plenty, especially with laundry available at most lodges (for a fee).
• Think Layers: Temperatures can swing from chilly mornings to warm afternoons. Layering is essential. Consider bringing a compressible insulated jacket for morning game drives.
• Long Sleeves for Protection: Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants help protect against insects and the sun.
• Colors: While there are no set rules on the type or color of clothes to wear on safari, neutral colors are the most common and accepted. It helps to blend in with the dust and the brush so as not to disturb the animals, however you don’t need to go out and buy an entire wardrobe in Khaki for this tour.
• Seasonal Guidance: Kenya has two main seasons—dry (Jan–Mar, Jun–Oct) and wet (Apr–May, Nov–Dec). During the wet season, include a compact rain jacket or poncho for short showers. Space is limited, so choose practical, mix-and-match pieces.
• Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are essential—but you can leave the heavy hiking boots at home. Most activities involve game drives and light walking, so sturdy sneakers or lightweight trail shoes are perfect

Medical Essentials: Bring enough prescription medication for your entire tour plus a few extra days, in original containers.

Pack medication in your carry-on, never in checked luggage, in case of delays.

Consider a small supply of over-the-counter remedies for headaches or upset stomach.

Saline nasal spray helps relieve dryness and clear dust after long drives.

Keep a photocopy or digital image of your passport and prescriptions stored separately from the originals.

Accessories & Extras:

• Portable power bank to keep phones and cameras charged when outlets are limited
• Earplugs for light sleepers (wildlife calls and generator hum can be loud)
• Headlamp or small flashlight for early mornings or dimly lit lodges
• Lightweight scarf or bandana for dust and sun protection
• Binoculars for wildlife viewing
• Insect repellent (30% DEET recommended; lodges provide some, but it’s good to bring your own)
• Washcloths are not consistently provided. If you prefer one, bring a quick-dry option—or consider facial wipes instead.
• A small travel lock for your luggage

Smart Packing Tips:

• Divide belongings with a travel companion so if one bag is delayed, you both have essentials.
• If traveling solo, pack a change of clothes in your carry-on.
• Hotels and camps supply shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Skip bulky bottles unless you prefer your own. Bring only essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm, and any personal items you can’t do without.
• Avoid packing valuables in checked luggage.

If you are travelling internationally with a child under the age of 18, please check directly with the airline for the legal documentation that is required. It is the sole responsibility of the traveler to obtain the proper documentation you will need to travel. Many requirements vary by airline and destination.

We will not be responsible for costs incurred for missed flights or canceled tours where a traveler fails to secure proper documentation.

We’ve provided current guidance to support your planning, but it’s your responsibility to stay up to date. Entry rules can change with little notice, so please refer to official government sources for the most accurate and timely information.

An Electronic Travel Authority (eTA) is required to enter Kenya at your own expense. The eTA can be applied for up to 3 months in advance and no less than 3 days in advance. We recommend applying for your eTA as soon as possible to avoid any delay. To apply for your eTA, please go to www.etakenya.go.ke. An accommodation booking confirmation is required as supporting documentation for the eTA; your Collette itinerary can be used as this confirmation.

Before You Depart: Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel plans to avoid service interruptions. Confirm international access, PIN compatibility, and any foreign transaction fees. Use cards with no foreign transaction fees, if available. Carry only a few major credit cards and ensure they’re activated for international use.

If you choose to review exchange rates or exchange currency before you depart for your tour, the currency in Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES).

US Dollars are widely accepted. You will need some small currency for gratuities and smaller purchases, and local currency may be needed for small items, such as postcards and postage.

Due to counterfeiting, vendors will not accept any $20, $50, or $100 US Dollar bills that were made prior to the year 2017. Hotels and banks will not exchange them. Bills must be in near-perfect condition with no tears. Please check your bills before you depart for your tour.

ATM machines are only available in Nairobi but are limited elsewhere. You may exchange your money at airports, banks, exchange bureaus, and at most hotels. In most cases, a commission charge will be assessed to exchange your money. At the hotel or in the city usually offer a better currency exchange rate than airports. Avoid standalone or independent ATMs, which can charge high fees or even retain cards. If unsure, ask your Tour Manager for help finding a reputable ATM. Your Tour Manager can also suggest the best places to exchange cash.

Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted at the lodges and smaller gift shops throughout the tour. Please note, traveler's checks are not accepted in Kenya.

If optional tours are made available to purchase, please note that credit cards must have an expiration date of greater than 30 days from the start of the tour.

When traveling to another country, you may need an adaptor and/or electric converter to plug your electrical devices and appliances into the local power grid. An adaptor changes the plug, so it fits into the outlet. A converter changes the voltage coming out of the outlet. To determine what you need, first verify if the plugs on your devices fit the outlet of your destination.

Plug types:

Kenya: Plug type G (three rectangular pins in a triangle). If your plug doesn’t match, you’ll need an adapter. Universal adapters are recommended for multi-country travel.

Voltage and Device Compatibility: Kenya: Voltage is 240V. Most modern electronics (phones, laptops) are dual voltage, so they usually don’t need a converter. Check each device for voltage info (on the cord, plug, or device). If your device is not dual voltage and differs from the destination voltage, you’ll need a converter.

For medical devices like sleep apnea machines, bring an extension cord along with the adaptor and converter.

Power Availability: Many lodges in Tanzania operate on generators or solar power and do not offer electricity 24 hours a day. Most lodges will shut off power during the day while you are sightseeing, so please plan ahead by charging cameras, batteries, and other electronics during times suggested by your guide.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT: Electricity is not always available overnight at some lodges. If you use a CPAP machine or other medical device that requires power, you must bring one that operates on rechargeable batteries. For guidance on voltage compatibility, adaptors, converters, and extension cords, please consult your doctor or the manufacturer of your device to ensure safe and effective use while traveling and voltage converter.

To support sustainability, you’ll receive a metal water bottle at the start of your tour. Lodges and safari vehicles provide water through refill stations or canteens, so you can top up your bottle throughout the day—helping reduce plastic waste while staying hydrated. Bottled water will also be provided at lodges for brushing your teeth.

At most of the lodges and tented camps on this tour, Wi-Fi can only be accessed from the main building and not from your room/tent.

Wi-Fi access has improved, with free or cheap internet available in many public spaces. Some restaurants, cafes, and hotels offer complimentary Wi-Fi, though at times it may not reach rooms in hotels. Wi-Fi will not be available onboard motorcoaches or other modes of transportation used during your tour.

Travelers flying to the United States from all international destinations will require extra screening when carrying powdered products weighing 12oz/350ml or more in carry-on luggage for security reasons. This added security measure will apply to all powders, with the exception of baby formula and medications. For your convenience, please consider packing any non-essential powders in your checked bag. Your tour includes luggage handling for one main bag per traveler. Upon arrival at each hotel, your bag will be delivered to your room and collected for departure. You’ll be responsible for handling your luggage during airport arrivals and transfers, so pack what you can comfortably manage.

While airlines may allow more or different luggage restrictions, your tour has specific limits to ensure everything fits safely and efficiently on the motor coach. Most airlines, including domestic carriers now charge fees for checked bags, so be sure to check your airline’s baggage policy before departure.

What You Can Bring:

Main Luggage: Limit 1 per traveler; A soft-sided (collapsible) duffel bag under 33 lb / 15 kg is required due to limited space in safari vehicles. Wheels are fine, but hard-sided bags are difficult to stow and will not fit in the vehicle.

Hand Luggage: A small, soft-sided bag to bring with you during daily sightseeing and transfers - a backpack is the most practical option. Tour vehicles have limited space under the seats and narrow storage space overhead, therefore hard-sided roller carry-ons are not suitable for this purpose.

Small Personal Items: Small items worn on your person (e.g., purse, belt bag).

Medical Devices: Essential medical items such as CPAP machines do not count toward your luggage allowance

Please Note: If space is tight, non-compliant bags will need to be stored separately or left behind. Please pack conservatively. While these guidelines are designed to ensure a smooth journey, we recommend avoiding maximum limits to prevent issues with vehicle space or handling. If you bring more than what is allowed on tour, you will likely need to store excess luggage at your own expense.

Luggage Protection: We cannot accept claims for loss or damage due to breakage, theft, or normal wear and tear from hotel, airline, or group carrier handling. Label your bags clearly: It’s important that all your bags are clearly labeled, even if you don’t plan to check them. This helps ensure lost or misplaced items can be returned quickly whether at the airport, hotel, or during sightseeing.

Your Collette document package includes two luggage tags:

One durable tag: Use this on the bag you plan to check, unless you already have a tag you prefer.

One paper tag: Please bring this with you on tour. Your Tour Manager will let you know if and how it will be used, as practices can vary.

For the safety and well-being of our travelers, children under the age of 13 will not be allowed to join us on this tour. Contact us with any questions at time of booking.

This tour doesn’t involve extensive walking. Be prepared for long days in safari vehicles over bumpy and dusty roads with limited restroom access. You will frequently need to climb in and out of safari vehicles throughout the tour.  

This tour includes several early mornings, warm temperatures, and sitting for extended periods, sometimes up to 6 hours. This tour is not suitable for travelers who use mobility aids or have significant back, knee, or respiratory issues.

When traveling in Africa, you will experience full days of sightseeing, often in warm temperatures reaching up to 96°F (36°C). From May through August, morning temperatures may range from 50°F to 57°F (10°C to 14°C). 

Maximum Elevation: 7,800 feet / 2,377 meters. 

There are several long transfer days on this tour, with 3 or more hours of driving (including stops). One transfer day is especially long, with up to 8 hours of driving (including stops). 

Full-day game drives require travelers to ride in a 4x4 vehicle for up to 6 consecutive hours, with a lunch break in the middle, often on dusty and bumpy roads. 

This tour includes several early morning game drives with departures at 6:00 a.m. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. 

Personal audio devices (headsets) are not included on this tour. In order to fully experience the destination, some of our accommodations on this tour have a limited number of rooms available. In these cases, your Tour Manager will be accommodated at a nearby property and will be readily accessible by phone. 

Single rooms are by request only and are extremely limited. Triples are not available. 

If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies, please notify us at the time of booking. While we do our best to accommodate requests, options may be limited and cannot be guaranteed. 

Meals are prepared in shared kitchens, and we cannot guarantee they will be free from cross-contamination. 

International travel may present challenges as menus reflect local tastes, and alternative diets may not be widely understood. Group meals typically feature pre-fixed menus designed to suit a variety of travelers. 

Specially-adapted 4x4 safari vehicles are used for the majority of this tour. They are designed for the terrain and to maximize game-viewing opportunities. They are not air-conditioned and do not have toilets. Frequent stops are made during travel periods. 

The roads in Kenya can be unpredictable, often consisting of dirt or gravel tracks that are significantly rougher and bumpier than what you may be accustomed to. Expect uneven terrain, dust, and some long days of driving on this tour. 

To complete your tour, we include round-trip airport-to-hotel transfers when purchasing our airfare with your tour. If you have arranged for your own air, we are pleased to provide you the option of purchasing these transfers. 

Please note that all transfers will leave at pre-scheduled times. For air-inclusive reservations, the name provided at time of booking must match your government-issued ID that will be used during travel. Name changes are subject to penalties.

Advance seating will be subject to the airline's terms and conditions. Due to tour scheduling, return flights should not be scheduled prior to 2:00 p.m.
